Advertising & Design Club of Canada judging — Toronto.
The ADCC invited me (Michael) over to Toronto to be on the graphics judging panel alongside Gail Bichler (Art Director, New York Times Magazine), Stefanie Weigler (Partner at Triboro Design, Brooklyn NYC) & Bobby C Martin Jr (Partner at OCD, New York).
The day of judging was really enjoyable with a good standard of work on display. I particularly enjoyed the 'lo-fi' judging system, we each got a bag of coloured plastic beans which we deposited into polystyrene cups (with holes in the bottom) marked with a 'Y' or an 'N'. There was a good level of discussion (the bit I enjoy the most) when it came down to awarding Merits, Silvers & Golds. We have been sworn to secrecy (under pain of death) by Executive Director Dawn Wickstrom not to reveal any of the winners! Suffice to say I think the pieces we picked out will make a strong graphics section in the 2011 Annual which I look forward to seeing in November.

I'd like to say a big thanks to Michelle Ovcaric for organising all the travel and hotel (The Hotel Le Germain was great) arrangments, and the whole ADCC team for being so good to us during the judging day, and for taking us out for a lovely dinner in the evening (where typically I managed to lose my iPhone).

Toronto (pt1)—

One of the nice bits about doing what we do as part of 'the job' is we sometimes get to travel abroad. The Advertising & Design Club of Canada invited Michael over to judge their annual awards 'Directions 2011'. We were extremely honoured to be asked, and we were very well looked after by the team during our stay. These four posts (of which this is 1/4) catalogue a little of what I got to see of the city of Toronto during our stay there.
A big thanks to Pierre & Mustafa for taking me out for drinks and introducing me to the delights of 'cave aged' cheese (and Poutine) and the wonders of downtown Toronto.

Beate Gütschow—

-
Beate Gütschow at The St Paul St Gallery, Auckland New Zealand.
15 June — 15 July, Gallery One.
-
Beate Gütschow’s work with photography addresses the construction of imagery, both within the medium itself through the use of digital and analogue technologies, and the cultural conditions that influence the creation of imagery. Gütschow’s compositions reference 17th Century landscape painting, and architectural and documentary photography of the1950s and ’60s. She draws from her archive of mostly analogue images of buildings, trees, landscapes and people to assemble digital composites. At first glance the final works appear convincing as real scenes, but on closer inspection the spaces and scenes are not quite genuine causing the viewer to question the constructed nature of imagery.
