In October 2011 — 148 posts, 904 comments and over 2.5m visits later — Design Assembly turned 3.
‘3’ archives over 100 published articles, comments included, as well as showcasing new and exclusive words and images from some incredible people. 100% of the profits from the sale of this publication will be shared proportionately between 3 charities with a combined global reach:
Cancer Research UK — United Kingdom
LIVESTRONG — North America
WCRF International — Rest of world
-
The total amount raised will be distributed proportionately
between these 3 charities according to the percentage of profits
generated by each catchment. For example, if 50% of profits are raised by pledges from US billing addresses, 50% of profits will be donated to LIVESTRONG, and so on.
-
According to Cancer Research UK, 1-in-3 of us will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in our lifetime. Can design make a difference?

New Order - World In Motion - D: Peter Saville (1990).

Finished cover.

New Order - Tour poster.
—
— Our good friend Corey sent these screen-grabs of some New Order artwork that he got a friend (who collects old machines) to open for him. So this is FreeHand 2, running on OS7. No colour (so you had to call out PMS separations with no reference on screen), and no copy + paste. Back then Photoshop had no 'Layers' and no 'History' functionality. It was truly the Wild West, and I for one am glad I went through this. Working pre-computer (as I also did) was also something I'm really glad I did, you learn so much about the process of print when you worked in overlays, marking up for colour etc.
— Seeing these screen-grabs really brought a tear to the old glass eye, and I thought it would be interesting for people to see them (even if most people think thank god I didn't go through that!). I think the whole process of going through this journey of pre-computer to computer brings truth to the saying 'What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger'...

We raise a glass to Myrtle.
Myrtle was our very elderly neighbour who sadly died last Thursday at the ripe old age of 92. She was quite fond of a tipple of Old Peculiar so we raised a glass to Myrtle in her memory.
Like most older people she was fiercely independent and it took quite a while for us to get to know her, but eventually she let us take her out for day trips and she even joined us for dinner last Boxing Day- at which she promptly downed a large glass of said Old Peculiar & said she 'felt dizzy' & had to lie down!
Born & bred in Walthamstow, she never moved far and always lived alone, having never married and so she had no children.
Myrtle was very vocal about lots of things and she used to come out with some real corkers. Here are some of our favourite Myrtle quotes (spoken in a gruff east end tone):
"I blame the government"
About Gordon Brown:
"I'd like to kick him in the balls"
Talking to some other neighbours at her doorstep:
"Are you foreign?"
Talking about Germans:
"Well, they're all Austrian when it suits them"
Referring to Michael:
"Where's the Boy?"
About Desmond Tutu:
"I dont like him at all, he puts me in mind of a snake"
And our all time favourite (talking about Geraniums ):
"They smell of mustard gas you know..."
She was a cantankerous old bird but she was very funny & it was a real pleasure to have known her these last 4 years- she will be sadly missed by us both.
